Politicians serve the people – they solve problems, they communicate, they are transparent, they have integrity.
Oh wait, you’re laughing. Why are you laughing?
Politicians, internet providers (eg: Comcast), big companies that gobble up smaller ones (just to destroy the beautiful thing they created), marketing companies that promise leads and sales and magical things….
Follow-through, communication, common courtesies, the basics of effective human interactions seem to be a thing of the past in life and business. Further, we seem to have no choice but to accept that this is the new norm.
Marketing isn’t just the pretty images and slick one-liners you put out into the world, it’s the real experience, the real feelings (excitement or disappointment) your customers have with your business/cause. It’s what people say about you to your face (eg: Comcast but no one is listening) but more realistically, what they say behind your back. Why are polls often wrong: because people aren’t even telling the anonymous pollsters how they really feel.
Do what you love. Do what you say you’re going to do; do more than you say you’re going to do. Care. If you care about what you do, the marketing will work itself out.
PS: Work with other businesses that care too.
PPS: Yes, I know I should probably fire Comcast.
