I started watching the West Wing. Yes, I know it’s 2024. I’ve been meaning to watch it since 1999(ish). I love hearing lines like “indeed, the internet is not a fad.” I love the intro sequence and the intro music. It makes me long for a time when more of us felt proud to be American; when the American flag wasn’t associated with the Republican party or something even more extreme; it was something we could all get behind, regardless of party affiliation.
I used to say I was a Democrat or a Liberal. Now I say I’m socially liberal and fiscally conservative and put myself in the Independent category. I’m beginning to think now that I should simply call myself an American. Sadly, there seem to be many Americans who would even find that offensive. They want to go somewhere else. But they don’t go somewhere else because there really is no better place to go. Even if things could be so much better than they are now. Even if we have two candidates that no one can really get excited about. Even while we wonder if the America as we know it will be gone far before her time, there is nowhere better. There is nowhere where freedom rings like it rings here….even still.
