I’m not sure if my team thinks I’m a little nuts with how often I remind them that I don’t want to date the representative. [Note: For a quick and funny description of what I’m referencing check out this Chris Rock bit on relationships.]
Of course, to some degree we’re all walking around being the version of ourselves that is best for the environment we’re in. Leah at a business networking event isn’t exactly the same as Leah out with a group of close friends….however, I hope the distinction is a faint one.
[Of course, I could argue that what is showing up is my conditioning and not who I truly am….but we’ll leave that philosophizing for another post.]
What I’m saying today is that I really hate the veiled agendas. Wouldn’t we all be better off if we showed up authentically doing, being, and asking for what we really want? I don’t want to hire someone for a job or a position that they will hate. I think everyone should enjoy their job and the culture they work in. I proclaim this to my team and Ryan says: “Well sometimes they really just need to pay the bills and they’ll say what they think they need to say to get the job.”
And, well ugh.
Sure, we play our roles. But at times we should go off script and opt for improv. I’ve heard that some of the best lines in movies were never in the script.
Live in the moment, be in the moment, meet, listen and speak authentically from feelings felt in the moment. It can be scary, but if we’re not dragging the past or the future into the here and now, we can make some great connections and leap over the fluff to get to the really good stuff.
